Black & McDonald is pleased to introduce the recipients of our 2025 Scholarships Program.

Our scholarships reflect our commitment to supporting our employees’ families.

We believe in nurturing the academic dreams of the next generation and fostering future leaders who will have a significant impact on our world. This year, we are proud to award $3,000 each to 16 deserving applicants in Canada and 3 in the United States.

Manitoba Region

Charlie Tardiff

Son of Julian Tardiff, Piping Supervisor
University of Saint-Boniface
Bachelor of Nursing

Charlie Tardiff is an honour roll graduate of Collège Lorette Collegiate’s French Immersion program and is now beginning his Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Saint-Boniface.

A 3rd-degree black belt and head instructor at Aethos Taekwondo, Charlie, leads summer camps and a mentorship program that builds confidence and discipline in youth. He also volunteers with the Manitoba Chapter of the Rare Disease Foundation, supporting families facing complex medical challenges.

Inspired by the care his great-grandmother received, Charlie aims to become a Nurse Practitioner, combining clinical expertise with compassion. The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will help him make a meaningful impact on healthcare.

Ashley Blazek

Daughter of Susan Roth, Job Cost Administrator
Conestoga College
Bachelor of Applied Technology in Architecture – Project and Facility Management

Ashley Blazek is continuing her academic journey at Conestoga College, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Architecture – Project and Facility Management after graduating with honours from the Architectural Construction Technology program.

Driven by a passion for sustainable design, Ashley plans to launch a business specializing in energy-efficient custom homes and cottages. She has already gained hands-on experience as a Junior Architectural Technologist, building her skills in AutoCAD, BIM, and NAVVis.

Outside the classroom, Ashley plays varsity soccer and volunteers at a local youth academy. The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will support her pursuit of a purposeful and impactful career in architecture.

Saskatchewan Region

Linden Schwab

Son of Brent Schwab, Service Tech – Saskatoon
University of Waterloo
School of Optometry and Vision Science

Linden Schwab is entering his second year at the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry and Vision Science, having graduated with distinction in Biology from the University of Saskatchewan.

Optometry has long been Linden’s dream. He believes that better vision empowers people to thrive in their personal and professional lives. His academic excellence earned him the Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists Scholarship, awarded to the Saskatchewan-born student with the highest average in the program.

Linden actively volunteers with the Friendship Inn, Salvation Army kitchen, and Cloth for Kids. He also supports global vision initiatives through VOSH fundraisers, which collect eyeglasses and raise money for underserved communities worldwide.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will help Linden continue his journey toward improving vision and enhancing quality of life.

Corporate/Corporate Services Group

Owen Martini

Son of Dennis Martini, Senior Director, Business Development, Facility Services
University of Waterloo
Environmental Sciences and Geosciences

Owen Martini is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences and Geosciences at the University of Waterloo, where he graduated high school with an impressive 89% average.

Passionate about sustainability, Owen has volunteered extensively with Credit Valley Conservation, reinforcing his goal of building a career in environmental protection. His academic achievements and hands-on experience reflect his commitment to advancing sustainable development and safeguarding Canada’s natural resources.

Beyond academics, Owen is a varsity hockey player and competitive golfer, demonstrating discipline and determination both on and off the field. The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will help Owen continue his education and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Northern Ontario Region

Georgia Meilleur

Daughter of Mark Meilleur, Electrical Foreman – Electrical Construction Division of NOR
Saint Francis Xavier University
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Minor in Political Science

Georgia Meilleur, daughter of Mark Meilleur, Electrical Foreman within the Electrical Construction Division of NOR is all set to attend Saint Francis University to pursue Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Political Science.

Her curiosity about human behaviour and the justice system drives her long-term goal of becoming a forensic psychologist or pursuing a career in criminal law as a prosecutor or defence lawyer. She is passionate about mental health and understands the factors that shape criminal behaviour, aiming to use this knowledge to influence positive change in society.

Committed to her community, Georgia has volunteered at food banks and youth camps, organized fundraisers, and played competitive hockey—a role that taught her resilience, teamwork, and leadership under pressure.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will support Georgia as she works toward her academic and career goals, helping her make a meaningful impact in the fields of psychology and law.

Southern Ontario FMO Region

Jacqueline Laine

Daughter of Joe Laine, Operations Manager – G.T.A. Service
University of Guelph
Bachelor of Science – Animal Biology

Jacqueline Laine is entering her second year at the University of Guelph, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Animal Biology. Her ultimate goal is to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and she is preparing to apply to veterinary school.

Jacqueline stood out for her strong commitment to animal care and her hands-on experience in the field. She has volunteered at her local animal hospital and with the Canadian Animal Blood Bank, taking on various responsibilities to learn and contribute wherever possible.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will help Jacqueline cover tuition and living costs as she continues her academic journey. With her passion and dedication, she is well on her way to turning her lifelong love for animals into a career of compassionate care.

Quebec Region

Romain Cartwright

Son of Louis Cartwright, Division Manager – Service & FMO, Montreal Service
Ahuntsic College
Police Foundations program

Romain Cartwright is in his second year of the Police Foundations program at Ahuntsic College, pursuing his lifelong dream of a career in public service.

He maintained a 90% average throughout high school and earned a scholarship for academic excellence in 2024. Romain also holds a secondary degree in French, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning.

Dedicated to his community, Romain volunteers with Operation Nez Rouge, promoting anti-drinking and driving initiatives. He also contributes through sports as a soccer player and high school flag football coach—roles that strengthened his leadership skills and ability to work under pressure, qualities essential for a police officer.

Professionally, Romain has gained hands-on experience with Black & McDonald, first as an administrative support for the Qmerit project in 2023 and later as a helper technician across various sites in 2024.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will help Romain move closer to his goal of a career in policing and making a meaningful impact in his community.

Alberta Region

Tyler Houlihan

Son of Robin Houlihan, Service Plumbing Supervisor – Calgary
University of Lethbridge
Master of Music

Tyler Houlihan is entering his second year of the Master of Music program at the University of Lethbridge. Both a musician and a researcher, Tyler is tackling one of the most overlooked challenges in the performing arts—performance anxiety. His research focuses on “in-the-moment” techniques to help musicians stay calm and confident during high-pressure performances.

His vision is to develop strategies that not only transform the experience for low brass players but can also be applied to athletes, public speakers, and others facing high-pressure situations.

Tyler’s leadership extends beyond research. He served as President of the University of Lethbridge Wind Orchestra after starting as a board member, and he founded the Music Health and Wellness Club—the first initiative of its kind on campus promoting mental well-being in the arts.

He also volunteers as an instructor for Wilson Middle School and the Lethbridge Home School Band, inspiring the next generation of musicians to perform with confidence and joy.

With the support of this scholarship, Tyler plans to expand his research and share these groundbreaking techniques with young performers, helping them overcome anxiety and unlock their full potential.

U.S. Region

Alexander Abbott

Son of Dawn Abbott, Payroll Specialist
Missouri University of Science & Technology
Engineering Management

Alexander Abbott is pursuing a degree in Engineering Management at the Missouri University of Science & Technology. He is committed to combining technical expertise with strategic thinking to help shape the next generation of industry leaders.

Alexander has already gained valuable experience through co-op roles as a project manager and superintendent, where he demonstrated leadership, resource management, and problem-solving skills. He also completed a standout internship with Black & McDonald as an Electrical Engineering Intern, contributing to complex projects and strengthening his technical foundation.

With his passion and drive, Alexander is well-positioned to guide innovative projects and make a meaningful impact in his future career. The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will support him as he continues to build his expertise and leadership in the engineering field.

British Columbia Region

Abby Holderness

Daughter of Spencer Holderness, Electrician
University of British Columbia
Bachelor of Health and Exercise Science

Abby Holderness is entering her third year at the University of British Columbia, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Health and Exercise Science with a clear goal of bridging gap between research and the real-world health outcomes.

A two-year Dean’s List student, Abby has an exceptional academic record. Her passion for healthcare is driven by curiosity about human motor function and the science behind movement. To deepen her knowledge, she will be volunteering in UBC research labs this summer, gaining hands-on experience in biomechanics and rehabilitation.

Abby’s commitment to service extends beyond academics. She has volunteered at Kelowna General Hospital and mentors prospective students at events like Homecoming and Experience UBC. Her ability to balance academics, work, and volunteering reflects resilience, leadership, and strong time management skills. The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will help Abby achieve her educational and career goals while easing the financial burden of higher education.

Southwest Ontario Region

Eveangeline McClean

Daughter of Derek McClean, Electrician
King’s University College
Political Science

Eveangeline McClean is pursuing a degree in Political Science at King’s University College, where she has achieved an impressive 93% GPA. Her academic excellence builds on meaningful high school co-op experiences at Victoria Hospital and Glen Cairn Community Centre, which sparked her passion for social impact.

Eveangeline is deeply committed to her community. She has served meals to the homeless, assisted with local events through the Thorndale Lions Club, and facilitated sports programs with the Boys & Girls Club of London. Her work as an inclusion counsellor for children with disabilities and as a camp coordinator reflects her leadership, empathy, and problem-solving skills.

With her blend of academic excellence, leadership, and a genuine passion for helping others, she is an exceptional recipient of the Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship and a future advocate for meaningful change.

Southern Ontario Mechanical Electrical Region

Lyndsey Jordan

Daughter of James Jordan, Electrician – SOMER
George Brown College
Sheet Metal Apprenticeship

Lyndsey Jordan is entering her third year of apprenticeship in the sheet metal trade at George Brown College.

Her passion for skilled trades is evident through her gold medal win at the Ontario Skills Competition, where she proudly represented Team Ontario at the national level and earned a bronze medal. Lyndsey has since gained valuable hands-on experience through her work at Noddle Sheet Metal.

Lyndsey has never let challenges define her. Despite navigating a learning disability, Lyndsey consistently earned Honour Roll status throughout high school and was named Valedictorian in her final year. She is also an active community member, volunteering with Norwood District Skating and participating in local events.

We are confident that this support will further enable Lyndsey to excel in her academic pursuits and future career in the Sheet metal trade.

Power Generation Region

Maighan Graham

Daughter of Paul Tennant, Ironworker
Trent University
Honours Arts Program – Psychology

Maighan Graham will be attending Trent University’s Honours Arts Program, specializing in Psychology. She aspires to build a career in criminal psychology to better understand the complexities of human behaviour and contribute to positive change in society.

Having faced significant challenges related to autoimmune illnesses and mental health, Maighan continues to demonstrate resilience and determination in pursuing her goals.

She is also committed to helping others and giving back to her community. Maighan has volunteered at a local community park and taken on roles in customer service and pet care; experiences that have strengthened her empathy, responsibility, and interpersonal skills.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will provide Maighan with the resources to focus on her studies and pursue her passion for supporting others. Her commitment to mental health and justice will guide her toward a future of meaningful impact.

Southern Ontario Mechanical Electrical Region

Sara Capotosto

Daughter of Vince Capotosto, Mechanical Superintendent
McMaster University
Integrated Business and Humanities

Sara Capotosto has demonstrated exceptional academic and leadership qualities throughout her education. She maintained a 94% average while serving as student council president, competing as a varsity athlete, and performing as a long-time competitive dancer, showcasing remarkable dedication and balance.

What truly sets Sara apart is her belief that leadership carries the responsibility of advocacy. In her own words, she is inspired by “the power someone’s voice has to support others when they can’t do so themselves.” This principle has shaped her involvement in mentorship and inclusion initiatives and fuels her dream of becoming a lawyer.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will provide Sara with the resources to continue her academic journey and pursue her passion for advocacy. We are confident that her commitment to leadership and justice will lead her to a future where she makes a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Atlantic Region

Ainsley Pelley

Daughter of Darrell Pelley, Service Technician

Bachelor of Social Work program

Ainsley Pelley is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Cape Breton University. She previously completed a BA (Honours) in Psychology with an outstanding cumulative average of 91.4 and was awarded the Canadian Psychological Association Certificate of Academic Excellence for her honours thesis.

Ainsley combines academic achievement with leadership and service. She has worked as a Research Assistant in both lab and community settings and served as President of the CBUSU Psychology Society and Psychology Ambassador.

Her volunteer efforts span mental health advocacy, youth mentorship, and campus support services, reflecting her deep commitment to social justice and community well-being.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will provide Ainsley with the resources to continue her education and pursue her vision of addressing systemic barriers in mental health and social equity. Her passion and resilience will guide her toward a future of meaningful impact.

Huzaifa Esmail

Son of Cassim Esmail, Buyer – Nuclear
Algonquin College
Business Administration

Huzaifah Esmail is applying to Algonquin College to pursue a diploma in Business Administration. A passionate advocate for youth and community development, Huzaifah has transformed his love for sports into meaningful impact.

He founded a “Hockey for Beginners” program and secured a $5,000 grant to give underprivileged children the chance to experience the game. Beyond the rink, he organizes monthly leadership talks featuring keynote speakers to inspire and equip young people with essential skills.

His volunteer efforts also include food drives, community outreach, and supporting local seniors, reflecting his commitment to inclusion and service.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will allow Huzaifah to focus on his education while continuing to expand programs that create opportunities for others. His entrepreneurial mindset, leadership, and dedication to community will help him to excel academically and make a lasting difference in the lives of those he serves.

SOFED Region

Alexis Izzi

Daughter of Mary Izzi, Job Cost Analyst
Trent University
Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialization in accounting and a minor in Computer Studies

Alexis Izzi is entering her fourth year of a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialization in accounting and a minor in Computer Studies, with plans to pursue a master’s degree after graduation.

A consistent Dean’s Honour Roll student, Alexis has demonstrated an exceptional ability to balance academic excellence with leadership and service. She has volunteered extensively, coached soccer, and worked part-time—all while mentoring young female athletes. She was also selected for the prestigious “AccelerateHER” Program, which empowers women in sport leadership.

Alexis’s connection to Black & McDonald runs deep. Her mother has proudly served the company for 25 years, and Alexis herself gained valuable experience through our Internship Program in 2024.

With the support of the Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship, Alexis will continue to excel academically while preparing for a future in business leadership, where she aims to combine financial expertise and technology skills to drive innovation and inclusion.

U.S. Region

Katelyn Brown

Daughter of Sheldon Brown, Mechanic
Galen College of Nursing, Salt Lake City, UT
ADN Registered Nurse

Katelyn Brown is entering her fourth year with an outstanding 3.9 GPA, exemplifying academic excellence while balancing leadership and service.

Driven by a deep passion for helping others, Katelyn is preparing for a career in pediatric nursing. She has been an active member of the student council, a dedicated athlete, and a consistent contributor to her community.

Her commitment extends beyond campus through 18 months of volunteer work with her church, supporting food and clothing drives and assisting in local shelters. These experiences reflect her compassion, integrity, and strong sense of responsibility.

Receiving the Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will allow Katelyn to dedicate more time to her clinical training and academic goals as she works toward becoming a pediatric nurse.

Alexandra Nicholls

Daughter of Kelly Nicholls, Transport Supervisor/Dispatch

Practical Nursing

Alexandra Nicholls is a second-year Practical Nursing student at Georgian College with aspirations of becoming a registered nurse and specializing in intensive care and global health.

Her journey reflects resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to helping others. Alexandra has gained valuable hands-on experience in long-term care facilities and has volunteered for over five years teaching children how to skate and play hockey.

Her decision to prioritize her passion for nursing over athletic opportunities in the U.S. demonstrates maturity and clarity of purpose.

The Black & McDonald Centennial Scholarship will enable Alexandra to focus on her studies and clinical training as she works toward her goal of making a meaningful impact in healthcare. Her extensive volunteer work, professional experience, and unwavering dedication to service embody the spirit of this scholarship and position her to become a compassionate and capable nurse who will change lives.
